HP Spectre X2 review (2017): A more refined Surface clone

The latest Spectre X2 offers plenty of refinement over the last model, but HP still needs to fix its battery and touchpad issues.

Gorgeous design ; Keyboard and stylus come in the box ; And the keyboard feels great ; Cheaper than the Surface Pro

Finicky touchpad ; Weak battery life ; Stylus isn’t as useful as the Surface Pen

Overall, the new Spectre X2 brings along some much-needed improvements, but a few issues hold it back from being a must-have. HP seriously has to do something about its battery life, especially now that Microsoft offers twice as much with the Surface...

HP Spectre x2 review: A less expensive Surface rival

The Spectre x2 undercuts its competitors with a lower price that includes a keyboard in the box (and it's a very comfortable keyboard, at that). Still, for more money you could buy a similar product with faster performance, longer battery life and a...

Less expensive than rival machines and includes a keyboard, too ; Comfortable typing experience ; Adjustable kickstand ; Decent audio ; Uses Intel's depth-sensing RealSense camera setup ; Supports pressure-sensitive pens

Doesn't support Windows Hello, despite having RealSense cameras ; Touchpad can be flaky ; Not so comfortable to use in the lap ; Slower than its rivals with shorter battery life ; Despite having a Core M chip, isn't necessarily thinner or lighter than...

In this increasingly big world of laptop/tablet hybrids, the Spectre x2 isn't a bad choice, especially at this price. But that doesn't mean it's the best. The x2 is not the fastest, the longest-lasting or the most comfortable to use in the lap. It's...

HP Spectre x2 review

A more dignified Surface Pro competitor

Elegant design ; Laudable performer ; Not a bad price for i7

Finicky trackpad ; Weak battery life ; Some bloatware

The HP Spectre x2 is, no doubt, one of the best Windows tablets ever made. From its hardy performance to its shockingly low starting price for a Intel Core i7 processor, the HP Spectre x2 is a drop-dead beautiful adversary to the Surface Pro, perhaps...

HP Spectre x2 (2017)

With its subtle design improvements and good value proposition, the HP Spectre x2 is a good, if not revolutionary, update to this line of 2-in-1 detachable-hybrid tablets.

3,000-by-2,000 resolution screen. Comes with keyboard and pen. Sturdy keyboard cover. Two USB-C ports. Powerful Core i7 processor with Iris Plus graphics.

USB Type A requires included adapter. Some fan noise. Short battery life.

The newest iteration of the HP Spectre x2 is certainly an improvement, and it is a relative bargain at its $1,299 price. That's especially true considering its stable keyboard cover and Active Pen are included, helping to avoid that $230 upcharge with...

HP Spectre x2 review: more imitation than innovation

HP's latest 2-in-1 convertible is improved, but doesn't match up to the Surface Pro

Comes with a great keyboard and pen ; Thin, handsome design ; Bright, high-resolution display

Wonky trackpad ; Limited battery life ; Loud fans ; Some performance issues

But right now, the Spectre x2 is no Surface killer.

Review: HP Spectre x2 (2017)

It costs less than a Surface Pro and beats it on performance, usability, and price

Performance well above expectations at this price level. Incredible detail packed into a superbright display. Rock solid stability.

Keyboard could be beefed up. Top of screen gets very hot under load.

HP's Spectre x2 feels like a flashy gift box -- with socks inside

HP's 2017 Spectre x2 has a lovely, well-executed design but battery life and performance lag behind the competition.

The 2017 HP Spectre x2 two-in-one has an elegant yet functional design, with a great keyboard, a bright, sharp screen with a decent stylus and above-average sound for a tablet.

Lackluster battery life and performance.

If you like your two-in-one pretty and sufficient for streaming video, lots of typing, ink-based markup or casual sketching in proximity to a power outlet, the HP Spectre x2 hits the mark.

HP Spectre x2 review: It beats the Surface Pro on value, if not performance

HP's Spectre x2 2-in-1 swings for the fences with its Kaby Lake chip, 2K display and Iris Plus graphics, but it falls short in a few areas.

Value: Pen, keyboard, and USB-A dongle come bundled ; Sturdy, elegant construction ; Kickstand holds the tablet stable all the way down

Battery life is just so-so ; Fan flips on frequently

HP Spectre x2 (12-a001dx)

Most of the hybrid PCs we see these days -- computers that shift between laptop and tablet configurations by flipping, folding or detaching -- have settled into the fold-back style popularized by Lenovo's Yoga line . These systems, including HP's own...

The HP Spectre x2 has a slim but sturdy design and a stiffer keyboard than Microsoft's similar Surface Pro, plus the keyboard cover is included in the base price. A mobile broadband antenna allows for easy on-the-go data.

The kickstand is hard to operate, the processors are slower than many other premium hybrids, and battery life is merely OK.

HP's slim, attractive Spectre x2 follows the road not taken by Microsoft's Surface Pro, using lower-power processors to keep the price down, as well as packing in the must-have keyboard cover.

HP Spectre x2 review

HP's upscale-feeling Spectre x2 is a hybrid that isn't afraid to go against the popular wisdom. That's an admirable quality in some areas, less so in others.
