Lexmark's X500n is the least-expensive color laser MFP we've tested. Considering its good overall design and performance, it's a tempting bargain--until you have to buy your first toner cartridge.

Lexmark X500n color laser MFP

Produces high-quality prints very quickly; low print costs; network ready; built-in ADF.

No junk fax blocker or secure fax receive mode; no way to save fax groups; walk-up scanning is not enabled with USB connections; grayscale scanning needs some improvement.

Although it's missing some fax features that many small offices and work groups find useful, the Lexmark X502n produces fast, high-quality prints. This is one laser multifunction that has a lot going for it.

At 35 kilos, you know the X500n means business when you prize it from its box (you'll need a hand to get it out of said box or, if not, you'll be needing an osteopath afterwards if you go it alone) and although the well made X500n is a blocky looking...

Text print quality, (relatively) fast set up, ease of use, shared network use, price

Copy quality: lacks detail, bulky, weight

A bulky device but one with that is a remarkably polished colour laser performer and at a cracking price, spoilt only by a lack of detail in copy mode and slow scanning.

In testing, the X500n MFD (multifunction device) delivered solid results with its ability to print, scan, and copy. A large factor contributing to the X500n's affordability is its lack of a fax machine; fax capability is an increasingly common feature...

Although it's slow with scanning and its copies lack some detail, this MFD is fast, easy to use and a strong overall performer.

This is a low-cost colour laser all-in-one, but a few obvious corners have been cut to reach the price. The lack of a multi-purpose feed, the complicated consumables set-up and the relatively high page costs detract from the overall value proposition....

In comparison to other multi-function devices, it's large - but then it's also a Colour Laser...

Speedy, inexpensive, scanner software is well programmed and user friendly, produces very good text and colour-document prints, creates high-quality scans

Setup instructions are unclear, reds are too strong in colour prints, some details don't carry over when making copies, scanner is slow

At £299, the Lexmark X500n is a bargain for a device of its kind. Although it's slow with scanning and copies lack some detail, this MFP is fast, easy to use, and a strong overall performer.
