If you are the type of person who will simply switch on your iPod and let it play, then the new iPod shuffle may appeal to you. As it stands, though, Apple’s latest music player is too small, uses a frustrating control system and doesn’t allow...

The ‘gun metal' version I have here resembles nothing so much as 2001's monolith shrunk to ant size. Maybe that's appropriate, because it feels like a rock-solid, indestructible, inscrutable piece of alien tech.

The shuffle gets smaller and now it talks to you, but it still lacks a screen, a radio, and even on-player controlsthey're embedded in the earbuds.

The diminutive Shuffle packs a generous 4GB of storage. While added storage is always appreciated, I would have liked to see some 2GB Shuffles available at a lower price. For one thing, 4GB might be too much for people expecting to use their Shuffles...
