It's a shame the portable and Apple AirPlay-equipped iHome iW1 speaker distorts at high volumes, but it's not necessarily a deal-breaker if you don't listen to music with deep bass.

Portable. Strong overall audio performance. Integrates Apple’s AirPlay wireless streaming. Also comes with cable for iPhone/iPad/iPod charging and direct playback. Capacitive touch volume controls allow for quick volume changes.

Distorts at high volumes on deep bass. Slighlty overpriced. Battery charging dock is awkwardly designed.

First announced in January 2011, iHome's iW1 was one of the first ‘budget' AirPlay compatible stereos on the market.

Best looking unit in this test; convenient docking station allows for easy portability

Confusing controls; confusing setup; no Wi-Fi direct

Sound quality from the iW1 was better than average. Bass and treble response were both good – and easily as good as the Sonos S3, which is about the same size.
