The Oppo is a bit of an oddity in today's home cinema market: yes it's a universal DVD/SACD player, but it doesn't play Blu-rays

Excellent upscaling ; fine sound quality when playing SA-CD discs via HDMI

Unfavourable exchange rates ; competition from Blu-ray Disc players ; looks a bit cheap

Oppo's DV-980H player is a fine DVD all-rounder; the upmarket DV-983H is a victim of that machine's success, the Blu-ray invasion and the plummeting pound

The Oppo DV-983H is pretty much the ultimate standard-def disc player, but its high price means videophiles on a budget can get a better bang for their buck.

If this player had been released two years ago we'd say that Oppo has stolen the market. Though it faces stiff competition from Blu-ray, the DV-983H may be the greatest affordable universal DVD player to hit the market.
