A 12-inch widescreen is a rare sight on any netbook, but Dell's Inspiron Mini 12 is as light as some of its 10-inch peers.

Big 12-inch screen. Good resolution. Very thin. As light as its 10-inch netbook peers. Ubuntu is a top-notch Linux operating system. Intel Atom platform is solid. Multiple battery options.

Slow, 4,200-rpm hard drive. Pricey relative to other netbooks.

While the first netbooks featured 8.9-inch displays, with later models usually boasting larger 10.1-inch panels, Dell's Inspiron Mini 12 is the first we've seen to use a 12.1-inch screen. Overall, it's difficult to see the Mini 12 as value for money....

Lightweight, thin, good usability, price

Larger than average size for a netbook, unexceptional screen resolution, hard drive capacity

Overall, it’s difficult to see the Mini 12 as value for money. The specifications are disappointing at this price point, and the 12-inch display also means users are more likely to consider buying a proper laptop.

Netbook or not, that is the question. After all the notebooks on

Agreeable design; Light and compact case; Thoroughly practical port configuration; Pleasant to use keyboard; Well-designed display; No appreciable noise emissions; Low surface temperatures

Reflective display impairs practical use outdoors; Power reserves only for basic applications; Short battery life

All in all, with the Inspiron Mini 12 Dell succeeds in making an extremely interesting notebook that still has a few weaknesses, like the battery life of around 2 hours, which is not very liberating. Overall, though, it constitutes a useful alternative...
