HTC Vive review

HTC Vive wins the first battle in the VR war

Best VR experience ; Intuitive controls ; Software partnership with Valve

$800 price tag ; Requires a high-end GPU ; Less comfortable than the Rift

If you have the budget, the HTC Vive is the best virtual reality experience on the market, bar none.

HTC Vive review: An experience that’s out of this world

We've been waiting for the consumer version of HTC Vive – the company's virtual reality (VR) system – to land in our living rooms for some time. It's hard to describe the heightened feeling of excitement that accompanies the launch of a brand new...

Innovative VR that allows you to move around in a virtual space, excellent visuals thanks to high-res displays, controllers are excellent and offer developers many options for use

Setup is far from straight forward thanks to sensor placement, occasional crashes when installing, Room Space requires a large area to play in, headphones not built-in

We've played a lot with VR over the years but nothing compares to Vive at its best. When Room Space is working and working well, it is a stunning experience without compare.

HTC Vive review: is this brilliant but flawed and demanding product the Betamax of first-gen VR?

It's expensive, bulky, hard to set up… But still so easy to love

Brilliantly immersive ; Can be worn at length ; Plenty of good games

Neither cheap nor simple ; Inevitably bulky & cumbersome ; Very few great games

HTC Vive review: Can HTC’s virtual-reality headset take on the mighty Oculus Rift?

Room-scale VR is an experience like no other, and nothing does it better than the HTC Vive

The best room-scale VR experience available ; HTC is investing in the Vive ecosystem ; Can be used either seated or standing

Most expensive headset on the market ; Still aren't quite enough killer apps out there ; So. Many. Cables.

A year on, I’d say Vive is better than it ever has been; its software catalogue has expanded, although there’s still room for improvement; and it remains the best VR headset on the market. Just because it’s the best doesn’t automatically mean you...

HTC Vive review: The most immersive VR headset of 2016

HTC and Valve are on a mission to bring VR to the front room, and the HTC Vive is the most expensive option in the current VR line-up, beating the £500 Oculus Rift and £300 PlayStation VR. With the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive now on the market, the...

The HTC Vive is an amazingly capable virtual reality headset that provides an experience unrivalled by its competitors with room-scale tracking and bespoke handheld controllers. Tracking is instant and when combined with a high-resolution 90Hz display...

HTC Vive

The HTC Vive is the most comprehensive virtual reality system available, and also the most expensive.

Immersive experience. Includes motion controllers and external sensors for whole-room VR.

Expensive. Tethered headset makes whole-room VR tricky.

Conclusions The HTC Vive is both the most expensive and fully functional VR system you can get. It's a solid $200 more than the Oculus Rift, but the motion controllers and whole-room tracking with the base stations mean the Vive can do a lot of things...

If you can afford it and have the room for it, the HTC Vive offers, quite simply, the best virtual-reality experience you can get.

HTC Vive review

Don't just play games; touch them, be surrounded by them, live them. That's the promise that only Vive currently fulfils

Room-scale is the best kind of VR ; Motion controllers make you feel even more immersed ; Steam support means it’s easier to get games

Heavier, less secure on your bonce than Oculus Rift ; Fiddly firmware and a mess of cables ; Currently lacking fully formed games

It asks more of you than Oculus does, but Vive also rewards you with an even more immersive, transformative VR experience

HTC Vive review: Truly immersive VR comes at a cost

The HTC Vive offers the best in-home VR experience yet, but it's too unwieldy to truly enjoy for extended play sessions.

Sharp and incredibly immersive VR ; Head tracking is superior to Oculus Rift ; Whole-room VR is impressive ; Motion controllers work well

Expensive ; Tricky setup ; Uncomfortable to wear for long periods

The Vive is no doubt the geekiest thing I have in my home right now -- and that's saying something. It's an impressive effort by HTC, which has had a rough few years in mobile, and Valve. It's oh-so-close to being the Holy Grail of VR experiences. It's...

HTC Vive review

I realize I'm not sure where I am, literally speaking.

The HTC Vive offers a flat-out amazing virtual reality experience with sharp visuals, great motion controls and full-room sensing to walk around in virtual space. Vive hardware can help indicate where your walls are, and an in-helmet camera can be used...

It requires a high-end PC to run. Long wires and lots of equipment take time and space to set up. Steam VR offers a lot of software but it isn't always beginner-friendly.

Vive is the best virtual-reality experience you can have right now, thanks to its motion controls and room-scale tracking. It's the closest thing to having a holodeck in your home.
