HTC U Ultra review

HTC pours lots of innovation into the U Ultra, but it's just not enough to beat the competition.

HTC U Ultra

The U Ultra is the latest phablet from HTC. It aims to entice buyers away from the Huawei P10 Plus, and to fill the gap left by the Galaxy Note 7, by offering users a variety of unusual features.

HTC U Ultra review: Bad decisions in a beautiful body

HTC's new U Ultra smartphone oozes style, and for the most part it's a very speedy, very well built flagship. That said, the company made some puzzling decisions here. This is a big phone with a big screen, but HTC fitted it with a relatively small...

Fantastic design ; Excellent build quality ; Mostly good performance ; Speaker setup works well ; Sense Companion is a good idea

The glass body scratches easily ; Not water- or dust-resistant ; Expensive for what you actually get ; Second screen doesn’t do much ; Small battery ; Relatively mediocre camera

I can't stress this enough: The HTC U Ultra is not a bad device. It's beautiful, well-built and plays home to a lot of good ideas. I think HTC was right to build a big phone, and the way it wants to subtly integrate an AI assistant into that second...

HTC U Ultra review

A large phone that doubles its screens

Gorgeous QHD display ; Attractive design ; HTC Sense still a great UI

Glass feels a little thin ; A lot of repackaged tech ; Very expensive

HTC's latest phablet is has an attractive look and a lot of great ideas - including a second screen - but a lot is recycled tech here and it's hard to recommend when the HTC 10 offers a lot of the same at a lower price.

HTC U Ultra review: Gorgeous big phone costs too damn much

Don't be fooled: This isn't a flagship phone, it just has a flagship price.

The HTC U Ultra has a sharp design, crisp display and loud speakers. A secondary display gives quick access to notifications and app shortcuts.

The phone's premium price and large size make unsuitable for most people. There's also no headphone jack, it isn't water-resistant and its battery life is poor.

The U Ultra is missing too many flagship features to justify its high price.

HTC U Ultra

The HTC U Ultra is an eye-catching unlocked phablet with powerful hardware and some unique features, but it's expensive and feels a bit half-baked.

Eye-catching design. Fast performance. Sharp display with useful notification panel. Included USB-C earphones for personalized audio profile. High-quality audio recording.

Reflective body is prone to fingerprints. Lackluster camera performance. No standard headphone jack. Proprietary audio adapter not included. Sense Companion isn't ready yet.

The HTC U Ultra is a gorgeous phone with powerful hardware and some unique features. But it doesn't feel finished. It doesn't ship with a headphone adapter, HTC's Sense Companion isn't ready yet, and camera performance clearly needs some fine-tuning....

HTC U Ultra review: Are two displays better than one?

The U Ultra feels a little over-priced, and with a new range of smartphones incoming - LG G6, Huawei P10, Samsung Galaxy S8, all of which might be

High quality design ; Unique looks ; Good camera performance ; Plenty of power ; Great sound quality and headphones

Ghosting in night mode ; Secondary display could be used a little better ; No 3.5mm headphone jack ; Software doesn't really suit this size of device ; Battery life is less than class leading ; Expensive

The HTC U Ultra sets out its stall in a strange position. It's a big screen phone from HTC that part embodies some of the company's previous traits (it's a Sense experience that's well-built), while introducing a new, unique finish. It's certainly...

HTC U Ultra Review: Flawed Beauty

The fans won't want to hear it, but HTC has made a misstep with the HTC U Ultra. Flagship follow-up to last year's HTC 10, it promises high-style and plenty of functionality to go with its premium $749 price tag, and there's no denying that its...

Beautiful design ; Great display ; Solid performance

No waterproofing and easily scratched ; Battery is smaller than it should be ; Camera only average ; No headphone jack

It may not sound like it right now, I concede, but I do consider myself an HTC fan. Like many who have been following the smartphone space as we currently know it since pretty much its inception, HTC earned itself a special place with clever,...

HTC U Ultra Smartphone Review

The comeback? The U Ultra flagship smartphone is to pave the way for HTC's desperately needed comeback. This might even be successful with an intelligent assistant, high-quality audio technology, and a second screen. However, some test results rouse...

very classy casing ; high-resolution second screen ; preloaded personal assistant ; lush memory configuration ; good camera photos ; quick charge function ; high-quality headset included ; high-resolution, viewing angle stable panel ; low temperature...

pressure sensitive rear ; fingerprint magnet ; mediocre speaker ; no 3.5-mm audio jack ; comparatively slow WiFi ; slightly inaccurate GPS ; screen's high color shifts ; high power consumption

In terms of design, HTC delivers a superb device with its U Ultra: The shimmering rear is definitely an eye-catcher. The handset can also score in many other aspects: The included high-end headset is pleasing, the lush memory configuration is a bonus...

HTC U Ultra review

HTC goes glossy with new U Ultra dual-screen smartphone featuring Sense Companion AI. We go hands-on with the Android Nougat phablet.

HTC has confused me with this phone. The HTC 10 fixed the problems of the One M9 but the U Ultra is a Frankenstein device. When a phone gives a better impression powered off than on, you know you’re in trouble. It’s not a bad phone full stop, but it...
