Google Pixel Buds review

These don't quite live up to the ‘Pixel' name

Comfortable ; Impressive sound ; Pixel-exclusive features are cool

Very cumbersome to pair with multiple devices ; Occasional Google Assistant blunders ; Lacks customizable gestures

The Pixel Buds are a compelling set of wireless headphones that mostly succeed in executing their ambitions. While the sound and battery performance earn top marks, it’s knocked down by finicky usability and the fact that its best features are reserved...

Google Pixel Buds Review: Ambitious but also seriously flawed

Google Pixel Buds review: A first attempt at high-tech headphones but unfortunately one that's flawed and requires a Pixel phone to unlock its full potential.

Excellent battery life ; Great hands-free calling quality ; Translations, while limited, can be useful

Fiddly and inelegant headphone storage ; Non-isolating sound ; Fiddly touch panel ; Translation limited to Pixel phones ; Cumbersome to use across multiple devices

The Pixel Buds are an ambitious attempt at high-tech headphones but they’re poorly executed and limited by a need for a Pixel phone if you want to use them to their full potential.

Google Pixel Buds review

These smart earphones are a real head-scratcher

Smart design ; Good battery life

Awkward fit ; Bassy sound ; Google Assistant is pernickety

Google Assistant can’t save these earphones from disappointment

Google Pixel Buds review

Pixel Buds only fully work if you own a Pixel phone. But with a high price tag and odd design, will those users actually want to invest in a pair?

Google Pixel Buds review: You (and Google) can do better

Since Google's new Pixel smartphones don't have headphone jacks, the company's decision to make a pair of wireless earbuds was only logical. Unfortunately, the Pixel Buds could still use some work. In fairness, they sound better than Apple's AirPods,...

They sound better than expected ; Intuitive touch controls ; Solid battery life

They don't shut out ambient noise at all ; Obnoxious case design ; Touch pads are easy totap accidentally ; Google Assistant seems hit-or-miss

Chris is Engadget's senior mobile editor and moonlights as a professional moment ruiner. His early years were spent taking apart Sega consoles and writing awful fan fiction. That passion for electronics and words would eventually lead him to covering...

Google Pixel Buds review: Overpromised, underdelivered

When Google announced the Pixel 2 smartphone, the company also announced Pixel Buds. The wireless earbuds are designed specifically to work with the Pixel smartphone lineup and boast an exclusive Translate feature.

Small, portable ; Battery life ; Sturdy case

Uncomfortable ; Translate is easier to use on a phone ; Decent sound

Pixel Buds review: Both the best and worst earphones you’ll ever use

Google's shot at the future of earphones is admirable, but misses the mark

Great sound ; Smart Google Assistant features

Google Assistant features are fussy ; One-touch controls are messy ; Uncomfortable for prolonged use

All of which is a great shame, because the Pixel Buds are different. They’re innovative and clever and exciting all at once. Does that justify spending £159 on them, though? Absolutely not.

Google Pixel Buds review

Google's Pixel Buds, the company's $159 (£159, AU$229) in-ear wireless Bluetooth headphones, were the surprise hit of the company's October hardware event that also saw the unveiling of the Pixel 2 , Pixel 2 XL and Pixelbook . What captivated the...

The Google Pixel Buds are lightweight wireless earphones that offer a relatively comfortable fit and decent sound in non-noisy environments. They wrap up nicely to fit in a very compact charging case that delivers multiple extra charges on the go....

Their open design lets in a lot of ambient sound. The "real-time" translation feature is only available to Pixel phone owners, but isn't a big leap beyond the existing Translate app. Bluetooth pairing can be more cumbersome than it should be.

The Pixel Buds are perfectly decent wireless headphones with a few extra tricks for Pixel phone users -- but don't expect a "Star Trek"-style universal translator.

Google Pixel Buds review: the future shouldn't be this awkward

Fiddly, frustrating, yet sometimes incredible

Fast access to Google Assistant ; Good battery life ; Acceptable sound for this form factor

Super awkward case ; Constantly have to adjust ear fit ; Touchpad allows too many errant taps ; Open design lets in too much outside noise

The Pixel Buds tease some really fantastic ideas that I hope Google will someday deliver on. But this is a first-generation product in the bad kind of way, and it looks even worse when you compare it to Apple’s growing success with the AirPods....
